What to Wear

What to wear and bring paddling?

Outrigger paddling is a water sport (doh!) so be prepared to get wet at sometime (maybe every time). There is even the chance (on the very odd occasion) where we could “huli” (turn upside down). So with all this in mind here is a list of items you might consider wearing/bringing along to training:

  • Tshirt/rashi
  • Board shorts
  • Shoes / Thongs / Crocs
  • Suncream
  • Hat /cap / beanie
  • Sunglasses
  • Drink bottle (preferably with water in it)
  • A change of clothes and a towel might be required post training.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANYTHING VALUABLE THAT CANNOT FLOAT – IF YOU END UP IN THE WATER, SO WILL YOUR VALUABLES.

Summer/Spring

  • It’s often hot and sunny, so remember to wear sun protection and bring water, drink some before you leave too.
  • We sometimes stop for a”dip” during these months also (weather permitting), so keep this in mind when dressing for the session.

Winter/autumn:

Just as Summer and Spring can be warm on the water, Winter & Autumn can be the opposite. You need to be aware that as you progress through a session you will become warmer, so you might want to consider wearing “layers” of clothes – this will allow you to remove items as you warm up (but be aware – there is no dry storage area in the canoe for those layers you remove).

You might consider:

  • Loose pants/shorts or if you get cold easily then track pants or thermals
  • Comfortable tshirt, or swimming rash shirt and a light jacket or a vest without arms
