koa kai regatta

Koa Kai Regatta, 4th Dec 2011 @ Kurnell.

Finally. First OC6 regatta of the season.

Koa Kai are to be congratulated for this well run sprints event, especially considering the windy conditions. 9 clubs faced the starter in OC6 500 & 1000m races + 250m sprints for OC1’s.

Racing (thankfully) was on flat water along a lee shore with +20knots Southerly change trying to blow the tents  & BBQ onto the course.  The canoes were doing their best to drive off the course and avoid the rounding buoys: very testing for the steerers and crews. Only 1 buoy tried to swim away but this was quickly recovered.

Our Newcastle crews performed really well.  Grim determination drove them along the course but recent sprint training sessions produced some snappy buoy roundings that kept them in with a chance: especially our lightweight girl’s team. Very smooth!

Briefly, the unconfirmed results:

500m OC6:

Master Women – 1st  B final

Open Men – 3rd B final

Open Mixed –  2nd (5 Islands just caught us) A final

Masters Mixed –5th A final.

1000m OC6:

Open Mixed – 1st  (by 2 boat lengths!) A final….we rocked!

Crew members:    Kathy, Petra, Tracey, Mel T, Kelly, Carolyn :::: Mark Bray & McConaghy, George, Lindsay, Matt Cook, Chris, Steve

Results from the Koa Kai regatta at Kurnell

Both teams are to be congratulated. Behind these results are plenty of “what if’s “ and darn hard work. To their credit, both teams gave it their best shot & were pretty well smashed by the finish. Puts a whole new emphasis on training / time on the water.

Weather on Botany Bay – 10 / 15 knot NE, choppy water, +2m NE swell outside. Short course almost NE, 7.5km, long course to a turning mark a couple km north of Botany Bay.

Short Course: Nathan – steering his first race, good job with a very neat buoy rounding beside ESOCCI !!; John & Alan – first? Race;  Isabell – 2nd race; Grant; Steve – 3rd race as stroke.

Regained the lead over the #7 placegetter, ESOCCI,  on the return leg thanx to a gutsy effort by all, esp John

Long Course: Jeremy – steered well with no huli’s; Matt Harris – stirring the crew along;  Brett Fisher (first regatta); Nathan & Luke Evans, Chris Harris….a mixture of fitness and experience levels

After a well executed start, the team were were ahead of the pack in a very credible 3rdplace before heading North out of  Botany Bay and into a whole pile of sloppy stuff. A combination of fatigue from hanging onto 3rd + lack of experience in the not so flat water saw the crew run down…..but still ahead of both Port Stephens crews!
