National titles results

The  club’s first crack at the OC6 Nats was very memorable.

Lots of canoes, friendly people, brilliant 28oC sunshine, almost dead calm with ” billiard table” flat water @ 25oC.

Everyone raced their butts off & partied well – quite painful in a couple instances!!

More photos to follow when members return.

Our ladies are now the current 3rd placed Australian Open Women Short Course Champions…..our ex member Antonio’s Noosa team took the Gold.   Refer results below: if 91 seconds quicker and they would be bragging even louder with Gold medals to show. The time they lost getting tangled up at the first turning mark could have made the difference  but we’ll never know. Likewise, if the two Open Women matured a couple of years then they were the second fastest Master Women.

Should be interesting next season with the development of our novices (and maybe others) and some more paddling time for this ‘young’ team. For some it will be a long cold Winter with plenty of work on the water and in the gym etc in preparation for the Cook Islands in November.

Our Open men did it tough over approx 22km for their 7th place. A bit more luck at the first turn or the fitness to hold out the 5th & 6th place getters during the final stages could have earnt a 5th place. Even better if the two Open male paddlers would only learn to grow up then the team would have been the 3rd placed Master Men’s crew. Next season ALL you male paddlers?????

There was amazing team spirit within the crews and everyone was ‘wounded’ by the time the finish was reached.

From the coaching staff: CONGRATS & thank you for trying.

Regatta debrief:

Conditions for both short course races were almost identical. Almost no breeze around a inside course over to Jimmy’s beach etc. So times are comparable.

1.       First  ‘womens’ SC crew came in 7th: the time diff for PD’s OW  crew & to ours is 36 little seconds!!.

2.        The ongoing challenge between our chicks & the MM crew (the heavy weight mob) is looking great! ……….a big carrot eh what?    They were just behind the guys @ 47.16 compared 46.37  & 2.22 ahead of our SMMx (Cheffy, George etc).

3.       Was really good to see our Senior/Golden/Platinum Mixed Masters crew going hard – next season will be another big step fwd.

4.       Both the mens SC crews seem to be bonding really well on the day – could be interesting nursery!

5.       Our Men’s LC crew were right up there and proved we are on track to do it a bit better – have come a loooong way to date. Canoe differences may help explain /bridge the gap a bit – guess we will keep trying to kill ourselves using/blaming the canoe we have . There were plenty of new canoes behind us

A few priceless comments reflect everything thats good about what we do::::::

“Good way to start some rivalry …………

Thanks for Saturdays race…It really meant a lot to me to get a medal on the anniversary of my first hip replacement.!!!…but more to the point our crew had such a great feel and were full of encouragement…so great to be part of it……………………

Great race yesterday with the extra effort to race 10 klms. Thank you all for the fun………………….

Just wanted to say thank you for including me in the team, I had a ball, it was awesome!

Can’t wait for the next one!!…………..

You really made us all believe we could do it.    I could also hear the encouragement from the rest of the crew too – it helps so much, doesn’t it?   I find it hard to speak at all…good way to shut me up I guess! Glad to see that people celebrated their collective grand performance in appropriate fashion – haar haar!   Next time I need to make sure I allocate enough time so I can stay and have a glass or three as well! ……………..

I suffered all the drunken paddlers last night at the presentation and have your medals……….

Woooo Hoooo well done all round.  Sorry I didn’t stay for the bonding now, but the headache Sunday morning was bad enough as was………..

Cool stuff.  Some great results. Congratulations to everyone…and yes it did hurt, especially the first 5 mins!!.  Thanks to all……………….

You gave the right amount of motivation and mongrel to get the best out of them…… It is bloody hard at the front of the canoe, you feel like you are on your own……

Sue’s glowing showing she’s worked hard…………..

I was also grateful for Steve’s dragon boat training too although I will continue to whinge each training session!…

Awesome job on being brave enough to take on 10km race yesterday. I was extremely impressed that you took on the challenge especially since it was against men’s crews that made us look like we were standing still on the start line……..It’s a shame that it is the end of the Novice race season. Next year you take on the short course against the rest of us :) ……….

Good day all around, it would be great to see some of the crews stepping up and tackling the long course next time!……..”

Gold Coast Cup

SATURDAY:

The Gold Coast Cup is probably THE changes race on the Queensland calendar (apart from Hamo).  Approx 40km along the beaches of Surfers Paradise from Greenpoint to Southport. There were  46 crews including Chris, Cookie and myself paddling with the Noosa Open Mixed crew (incl our ex,   Antonia) and Nathan slotted into the Outrigger Aust Master Men crew. Results below in colour.

Couple of notes:

1.       Weather – E/SE 8 knots, 1-2 m swell, couple showers……….not a lot of help. Anyone in the support boat got a bit sea sick, esp after eating some ‘snakes’.

2.       Nath’s crew (Mirage) finished 2nd Master Men after got pipped coming in through the famous Southport bar by the Northern Beaches guys (Spirit)…..2:55:33. Outrigger Aus Open men 10mins(+1 mile) ahead! Not sure why the time penalty but they would have deserved it.

3.       Our Noosa Open Mixed (Roc) slogged it out for 7th place @ 3:36:09 – 10 mins behind first placed Port Macq who had 2 huli’s.  Northern Beaches Open women were 10mins behind after stopping to duct tape their split arma (start line crash) and had it full of water for most of the race..ouch!

SUNDAY:

OC1/2 Races- long course 12km.

Nathan 2nd, Chris/Steve 1st Master men(3rd OC2). Nathan lost time with 3 “burley sessions” during the race courtesy of Saturday night after party etc.!!!

Te Ika Nui 2012 regatta

The weather was a bit damp but nothing like earlier in the week. A bit of swell outside, 15knot NE and a Hawkesbury River with a belly full of fresh water .

Similar crews from the Pittwater regatta competed on Saturday at Te Ika Nui’s regatta at Ettalong and they are showing real signs of improvement.

Novice Women: Kelly (Ned) and the girls were on fire. With heaps of encouragement they took out first place: got some good prizes for the Coach, thanx. (Need crew photo?)

Short Course: Men & Women: Hmmmm! Its obvious Lindsay has fell back into bad company with his temporary return to Wollongong (Five Islands) –the men well ahead of the Mel D’s women’s crew: a few boat lengths at least!) when Mr Splash struck and the guys spent time with a huli drill. All good and chivalrous but hey guys not on race day! We do have some honour to protect.

Long Course Men: Always an interesting first couple Km after the start as teams race out the channel. We dun good – old canoes are good for a bit of push and shove. The race was out and back to Box head: half flat water and half good fun.

paddlefest 2012

Best yet Paddlefest coming in March

02 Feb, 2012 01:00 AM

IT’S wet, funny and family entertainment at its best.

It is when and where every member can have a go at something enjoyable which is also helpful. It’s Paddlefest.

Centennial Coal is the major sponsor of Paddlefest 2012, the popular water-borne event launched by Rotary Toronto

Sunrise in 2007.

This year the aim is to raise $40,000 towards its assistance campaign to help the homeless in the Lake Macquarie area.

“In 2011 we launched a major Paddlefest fundraising campaign to help homeless youth and families in our area by

providing emergency accommodation. This year we are hoping to raise the money needed to purchase a suitable

property,” Paddlefest Committee chairman Geoff Hurt said.

“We are delighted to have Centennial Coal as our major sponsors again this year to help us reach our fundraising goal.”

The emergency accommodation will be set up to provide more than just shelter.

“It will be a base where support, counseling and life skills will be available to those in need,” he said.

“Our Rotary Club along with Rotary Club of Toronto are working together with the Salvation Army to raise the $250,000

needed to buy the property and we are hoping that the funds raised at Paddlefest will allow us to purchase the house by

the end of this year,” Mr. Hurt said.

Attracting over 500 people last year and raising over $100 000 in the past five years, Paddlefest is a fun filled day with

dragon boat, outrigger and canoe races for novices and experts, a one kilometer lake swim and the High School Team

Challenge seeing schools take on a series of tasks including building and sailing a boat.

“You don’t have to paddle to support us, you can sponsor a school team, volunteer on the day, supply equipment, or simply make a donation via our website www.paddlefest.com.au,”

Mr Hurt concluded. said.

Paddlefest is being held on Sunday March 4 at Speers Point Park.

For more information and to make a donation visit, www.paddlefest.com.au.
